Gluten Free French Onion Soup

This Gluten Free French Onion Soup is super easy to make, flavorful and oh so cheesy! Made with caramelized onions, wine broth and Gruyere cheese. Now even if you’re gluten free you can enjoy this classic French soup! 

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 stick of Butter
  • 45 medium sized Sweet Onions sliced thin into half moons
  • 2 Tbs Gluten Free All Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 cup White Cooking Wine
  • 1/2 cup Sherry
  • 8 cups Beef Broth
  • 1 small bunch fresh Thyme tied into a bundle with cooking twine
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • Sea Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 8oz Gruyere cheese grated
  • 1 Gluten Free Baguette (I like the Schar brand)

Instructions

  1. In a large Dutch oven add Butter and heat over medium heat until melted
  2. Add the Onions in layers and sauté until they are soft and golden, about 20-30 minutes
  3. While the Onions are cooking prepare the Baguette
  4. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  5. Slice Baguette into 1 inch rounds and place on a baking sheet
  6. Bake 5 minutes each side until crispy, then set aside
  7. Add Flour to the Onions and stir 1-2 minutes
  8. Add the White Wine and Sherry, simmer for 10 minutes stirring occasionally
  9. Add Broth, Thyme bundle, Bay Leaves, Salt, Pepper and simmer for 20 minutes
  10. Remove Thyme bundle and Bay Leaves, discard
  11. Place French Onion Soup bowls on a baking sheet (make sure they are oven and broil proof bowls)
  12. Ladle Soup into each bowl
  13. Place 1-2 bread rounds into each bowl
  14. Top with Gruyere
  15. Broil 2-3 minutes until cheese is nice and melted
  16. Enjoy!
