It’s Friiidayyyy! And it’s the start of Labor Day weekend, Woo HOO! So let’s start this weekend off with a cocktail, shall we? These Mason Jar Salty Dog Cocktails are one of my favs!
Currently we are under a tropical storm warning in the north east part of Florida where I live. This will be my second tropical storm experience since moving here over 2 years ago. To be honest, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be.
Since I lived the majority of my life in land locked Minnesota, I didn’t really know what to expect. Basically it’s just been cloudy, a little rainy, and windy for like 3 days. Man these things move slow, I’m really starting to go through sun withdrawals!
When I first moved here and heard there was a Hurricane coming our way (which later downgraded to a tropical storm), I immediately went to the grocery store and filled my shopping cart up with tons of water. Everyone was looking at me like I was some kind of freak. I just always had this image that the store shelves would be bare. Not the case, well at least not until the very last minute when it’s determined whether or not a Hurricane is actually going to impact us.
From what I’ve learned true Floridians actually have Hurricane parties. Yes, that’s right, they stock up on liquor and invite the neighbors over to ride out the storm! I like this state better and better every day. 🙂
Well the nice thing about Drizly is that you don’t have to leave your house to get the booze. Yep, you heard that right. It’s an alcohol delivery service! So now when there’s a storm brewing, or you just don’t feel like leaving the house, you can simply order all of your cocktail ingredients right on their website and it gets delivered to your house in about an hour! How cool is that!
So when the folks at Drizly asked me to create a cocktail recipe for them, I was more than thrilled!
I decided to create a Salty Dog with a twist. If you’re not familiar with a Salty Dog, it’s basically Vodka or Gin mixed with Grapefruit juice in a glass with a salted rim.
I chose Vodka for this recipe, since I prefer that over Gin. Sorry Gin lovers.
When I make cocktails, I always opt for the top shelf liquors because of the quality and the taste. Trust me, there is a taste difference between top shelf and bottom shelf liquor.
I also chose to use a Mason Jar, because I love using Mason Jars for cocktails! It holds more liquid, and keeps your drink colder longer. Plus it just looks cool. 🙂
I took my Mason Jar and rubbed the rim of it with the inside of a Grapefruit. Then I dipped the rim in a bowl that had Pink Himalayan Salt, getting salt all around the edges of the rim. (You can use regular Sea Salt as well, I just thought the pink colored salt would look better).
Next add enough ice to fill the Mason Jar with. Then pour in your Vodka and Grapefruit Juice. I added a fresh sprig of Rosemary to give this cocktail a unique flavor. Fresh herbs in cocktails are just soooo good!
