We found a little piece of paradise in Friars Bay, St. Kitts. St Kitts, wow… it’s one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. St Kitts was one of our cruise ship stops, so we only were able to visit this island for the day.
When I first stepped off of the ship and walked into the cruise port area, I noticed it was a small town. There were a handful of shops for the tourists on the ships, but not much else there. We didn’t have a plan of what we were going to do there, so we decided to wing it. I learned that sometimes when you don’t have an itinerary planned and go with the flow, you stumble across some amazing things! 🙂
We walked over to the tourist info area and looked at the map for the local beaches. There were 3 that were close to the cruise port. So we asked the guy working there what beach he recommended. He advised we go to the furthest one away, in fact he was telling everyone on the ship to go to that beach. That to me is usually a sign of an over crowded beach, and we were looking for a little peace and quiet today. So we asked about Friars Bay, which was a little closer to the cruise port (about a 20 minute cab ride). He told us we wouldn’t like it…hmmm I’ll be the judge of that! Friars Bay it is!
Cabs are easily accessable at the cruise port in St. Kitts. The cab fare was $5 per person each way to Friars Bay. The interesting thing was when we arrived at Friars Bay, the cab driver told us he would wait for a few minutes so we could check out the beach and decide if we really want to stay there. If we chose not to he said he would drive us to the beach that the tourist info guy wanted us to go to. I was thinking, wow what’s wrong with this beach and why do they keep trying to deter us from it?
We walked down to the beach area and immediately fell in love…WOW we were in Paradise! We told the cab driver we were staying at Friars Bay. 🙂
The first thing we noticed were the tiki umbrellas on the beach. And it was quiet, YES this was exactly what we were looking for! You can rent 2 chairs under a tiki umbrella for $10 here.
There’s also a bar here called Shipwrecks which has a chill vibe, good food, and good drinks. I recommend the Carib Beer, it’s only $3 per bottle.
This place kind of reminded me of Gilligan’s Island, with the cool shower stalls and changing room. 🙂
You can also get a massage using an Aloe Vera leaf (which is great for sunburned skin) on the beach. The price is around $35 for 1/2 hour (price is always negotiable here).
The beach here is great for snorkeling, bring your own or you can rent it here. Water shoes are a must here, it’s very rocky and be careful not to step on the coral.
With the black sand and the mountainous views, Friars Bay is absolutely breathtaking.
St. Kitts…We will be back and this time we will stay longer!!! 🙂
