How To Make Taco Seasoning with only 7 ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!

I love tacos.

This phrase always makes me think of that funny meme with Jack Black. If you haven’t seen this yet, google it. It makes me laugh every single time I see it.

I make tacos at least once a week in our house because

A) I love tacos

B) It’s a quick and easy meal to make during the busy week

and

C) I love tacos

Taco Seasoning

In the last couple of years I’ve been becoming more conscious of what food I put into my body. There are just too many pre packaged foods out there that have mystery ingredients in them (I call them mystery ingredients if I can’t pronounce them). I have a rule, if I can’t pronounce an ingredient that comes in a package, I don’t buy it or eat it.

One of the documentaries that was influential to me was Food Inc If you haven’t watched this yet, I highly recommend it. It’s life changing, in a good way. It really makes you think about what you put in your body, and is eye opening to what some food companies put in their food.

I switched over to buying Organic Taco Seasoning about a year ago, but it wasn’t very cost effective. I was spending $2-$3 dollars on one packet of taco seasoning. That may not sound like a lot, but when you eat tacos as much as I do it can add up.

So I decided to start making my own Taco Seasoning using Organic spices. This can be made at a fraction of the price of the store bought version. Plus it’s fresh and I know exactly what’s in it.

I try to buy Organic spices when I can. Yes they are slightly higher in price, but the flavor is so much better. Plus just the thought of ingesting chemicals from non-organic foods/spices just does not appeal to me.

The beauty about making your own Taco Seasoning is that you can spice it up more or less to your liking. If you want a little more kick, sprinkle a dash of Red Pepper Flakes in the mix!

I make my seasoning in a bigger batch and store it in an air tight container. When I’m ready to make tacos, I just scoop out 2 Tbs of the mix and sprinkle it over the cooked meat at the end. Then mix it with a ½ cup of water and cook until it’s all absorbed.

You can also use this in soups or salads.

I recently used this in my Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup which is the next best thing to tacos.

I’ve also used this in my Caribbean Fish Tacos altering it a bit by adding in Caribbean Jerk Seasoning. Yum!

And then of course I used this for my Slow Cooker Hawaiian Chicken Tacos which is a super easy and different way to make tacos.

If you make this Taco Seasoning, let me know what your favorite way to use this is by leaving a comment below! I love hearing what you all come up with!

Cheers!

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbs Chili Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Onion Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • 1 ½ teaspoon Ground Cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Sea Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

Instructions

  • Mix all seasonings together and store in an airtight container until ready to use.

Notes

If you want to make this in bulk, this portion is equal to 2 Tbs when mixed together. I use 2 Tbs for 1 pound of meat or fish. Therefore 4 Tbs of mixed seasoning covers 2 pounds of meat, etc.
When using this for tacos, I add ½ cup water along with 2 Tbs of seasoning for 1 pound of meat.
