Homemade Blackened Seasoning made with spices you probably already have on hand! Put it on chicken, beef, fish… the possibilities are endless! Such a great way to kick your meal up a notch!
Most of the time when I go out to eat, I order some sort of dish that has blackened seasoning on it. I just love the spicy kick!
I’ve been trying to recreate this, so I could make my own at home. It took a few attempts until I finally nailed it!
Seriously though, everyone I have had try this absolutely says it’s THE best they have ever had. Ahhh that just makes my heart feel so warm inside.
What is Blackening Seasoning?
It’s a blend of herbs and spices that are used to blacken fish or meat. This method of cooking is usually done with a hot pan and some oil or butter, then cooking the meat until it develops a blackened crust.
You can also grill the fish or meat by using this seasoning as a dry rub. If you are grilling fish it’s best to use a special grate for fish on the grill so it doesn’t fall through.
What is Blackening Season Made From?
Even though you can purchase this in the store, I find it cheaper to make this at home. Plus I can control my own salt level and make it to the right spice I like!
It’s made with a blend of Smoked Paprika, Cayenne, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Oregano, Sea Salt and Pepper.
What is the difference between Blackened Seasoning, Cajun and Creole Spice blends?
Although they are generally in the same spice category, Cajun Seasoning tends to be the spiciest of the three. Creole has more of a variety of herbs mixed it and Blackened falls in the middle of those two.
Ingredients for Homemade Blackened Seasoning
- 2 Tbs ground Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp ground Cayenne
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 1/2 tsp dried Oregano
- 2 tsp Sea Salt
- 1 tsp Black Pepper
How to Make Homemade Blackened Seasoning
Just mix everything together and store in an air tight container in your spice cupboard. I like to use these baby food mason jars to store it in. (affiliate link)
Now you can certainly double or triple the recipe depending on how often you use it.
Ways to use Blackened Seasoning
When I use it as a dry rub, I sprinkle this over every part of the meat, fish, or seafood. You want a nice even layer of the seasoning.
You could also use it in a marinade. Use your favorite oils, cooking wines, etc and just add a few tablespoons of this for a super yummy marinade.
Note that if you use it in a marinade it won’t have the same type of kick as using as a dry rub. So I recommend experimenting with both to see which one you like.
