How to choose the best Ribeye Steak
- Choose Grass-Fed over Grain-Fed – It may cost a little bit more, but it’s totally worth it! Grass-Fed steak is a healthier choice than Grain-Fed because Grain-Fed cows are usually given a diet of corn, soy and other grains which leads to more Intramuscular fat. There is definitely a taste difference as well.
- Marbling – You want to look for a good amount of marbling in the steak. This will ensure a more tender and juicy steak.
- Thickness – Look for the thickest cut of meat. I prefer around 1 – 1 1/2 inch thick steaks.
- Bone-in or Bone-out – This it totally your preference. I typically choose whichever one is on sale.
How to prepare Ribeye Steak
Ribeye is so tender when grilled right, so there is no need to marinate it.
You want to take your steaks out of the fridge and let them sit at room temperature at least 30 minutes, but not more than an hour prior to grilling.
Sprinkle both sides with a generous amount of Sea Salt and Black Pepper. This is seriously the only seasoning you need. It’s also important not to use regular table salt, use Sea Salt my friends for the best flavor!
How to Grill Ribeye Steak
Once you got them prepped, seasoned and rested at room temperature, fire up the grill!
Clean grill grates with a quality grill brush before cooking then preheat grill to 450 degrees. You want the grill nice and hot!
Place Ribeye over direct heat and cook 4-5 minutes each side for medium rare. Remove from grill, place on a platter and cover with aluminum foil.
Let the Ribeye rest for 10 minutes. This step is so important, because it cooks the inside of the steak a little more and really lets the juices come out.
Oh and here’s a tip, any juices that come out on the platter are great for dipping bites of your steak into! It’s homemade Au Jus!
If you look at the photos below you’ll see what I mean by the juices that come out of the steak. It’s just DREAMY!
There you have it, The Perfect Grilled Ribeye Steak!
Tips
- Season generously with the sea salt and pepper
- Make sure you let the steak rest at room temperature for 30 minutes, don’t skip this step! If you don’t, it will take longer to cook and the outside will be overcooked.
- Use a meat thermometer at the center of the steak to check the doneness. See my grilling temperature chart below.
- Always keep an eye on the grill, never walk away! Since these steaks have high marbling the melting fat can ignite and flare-ups can occur. If flare-ups occur move your steaks out of the fire until the flare goes down.
- Don’t forget to let the meat rest for 10 minutes after cooking. This ensures a nice tender and juicy steak every single time.
Grilled Ribeye Steak Temperature
I highly recommend getting a meat thermometer for grilling. This will take the guess work out and you will never have to worry about having it under or over done. Personally I prefer mine done medium rare like shown in the pictures.
- 120 – 130 degrees F = Rare
- 130 – 140 degrees F = Medium Rare
- 140 – 150 degrees F = Medium
- 160 – 170 degrees F = Well Done
Keep in mind that the Steak needs to rest for 10 minutes, so it’s best to pull it off the grill a few degrees before you reach your desired temperature.
