This Gluten Free French Onion Soup is super easy to make, flavorful and oh so cheesy! Made with caramelized onions, wine broth and Gruyere cheese. Now even if you’re gluten free you can enjoy this classic French soup!
The temps have dropped again and I’ve been all about making soups lately. There’s just something so comforting about cozying up to a nice hot bowl of soup.
This was my first time making French Onion Soup since I went gluten free several years ago. Honestly I don’t know why I waited so long!
My absolute favorite Baguette to use in this soup is the Schar Baguette, which currently I can only find at my local Sprouts or online. I really wish I could find these in every grocery store, they are just so good and fit perfectly in these little soup bowls (affiliate link) I found on Amazon!
French Onion Soup Ingredients
- 1 stick of Butter
- 4 – 5 medium sized Sweet Onions sliced thin into half moons
- 2 Tbs Gluten Free All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 cup White Cooking Wine
- 1/2 cup Sherry
- 8 cups Beef Broth
- 1 small bunch fresh Thyme tied into a bundle with cooking twine
- 2 Bay Leaves
- Sea Salt and Pepper to taste
- 8oz Gruyere cheese grated
- 1 Gluten Free Baguette
How to Make French Onion Soup
In a large Dutch oven add Butter and heat over medium heat until melted. Add the Onions in layers and sauté until they are soft and golden, about 20-30 minutes. While the Onions are cooking prepare the Baguette.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Slice Baguette into 1 inch rounds and place on a baking sheet. Bake 5 minutes each side until crispy, then set aside.
Next add the Flour to the Onions and stir 1-2 minutes. Add the White Wine and Sherry, simmer for 10 minutes stirring occasionally. Then add Broth, Thyme bundle, Bay Leaves, Salt, Pepper and simmer for 20 minutes.
Remove Thyme bundle and Bay Leaves, discard. Place French Onion Soup bowls on a baking sheet (make sure they are oven and broil proof bowls).
Ladle Soup into each bowl. Place 1-2 bread rounds into each bowl and top with Gruyere. Broil 2-3 minutes until cheese is nice and melted.
